FE-studies of a Deterministic and Statistical Size Effect in Granular Bodies Including Shear Localization

چکیده
The numerical investigations of size effects in granular bodies during a quasi-static plane strain compression test are performed. To describe a mechanical behaviour of a cohesionless granular material during a monotonous deformation path in a plane strain compression test, a micro-polar hypoplastic constitutive model was used. It includes particle rotations, curvatures, non-symmetric stresses, couple stresses and the mean grain diameter as a characteristic length. In the paper, deterministic and statistical size effects in geometrically similar granular specimens are analysed. The deterministic calculations were carried out with a uniform distribution of the initial void ratio. To investigate a statistical size effect, in order to reduce the number of realizations without loosing the accuracy of the calculations, a Latin hypercube method was applied to generate symmetric Gaussian truncated random fields in a granular specimen. The results show that the statistical size effect is significantly stronger than the deterministic one. The shear resistance decreases and the rate of softening increases with increasing specimen size. The effect of the boundary roughness on shear localization is pronounced.

Simulation of Shear Localization in Granular Bodies within Gradient-Enhanced Hypoplasticity
The paper presents a FE-analysis of a spontaneous shear localization inside non-cohesive sand during plane strain compression. The calculations were carried out with a gradient-enhanced hypoplastic constitutive law. The hypoplastic law can reproduce essential features of granular bodies depending on the void ratio, pressure level and deformation direction. To model the thickness of shear zones,...

A spontaneous shear localization in granular bodies is investigated with a finite element method based on a hypoplastic constitutive model. To simulate properly the formation of shear zones, a hypoplastic model was extended by polar, non-local and gradient terms to take into account a characteristic length of the microstructure. Two different rate boundary value problems were numerically analyz...

Semi-solid materials undergo strain localization and shear band formation as a result of granular nature of semi-solid deformation. In the present study, to analyze the shear localization, a unified viscoplastic constitutive model was developed for the homogeneous flow. Then, a linearized analysis of the stability performed by examining the necessary condition for the perturbation growth. For t...

In some natural events such as soil failure the deformations are localized in narrow restrictions, which are called shear bands. This event which is a fundamental phenomenon in granular material, has been widely investigated during recent decades within expensive experimental tests and also some numerical simulations. Most of previously used numerical methods are based on continuum theories des...
